Young New York doctor Natalie Wayne is about to present the results of her ambitious research. She has always felt most at home in the lab, surrounded by MRIs and DNA strands. But then it`s a single phone call that upends her life: A hospital in New England answers the phone. Her father, Daniel, has checked himself out of the hospital after an accident and disappeared. Natalie’s mother Kate, an actress on Broadway, can’t see stopping her theater rehearsals because of her ex-husband.
Responsible as Natalie is, she travels to Daniel’s new home to at least briefly check up on him. When she arrives at her father’s house, however, the problems are just beginning. Daniel, the charismatic and fun-loving small-town doctor with his own practice, does not welcome his daughter at all. Against her will and despite his concussion, he continues to work in the practice and wants to get rid of her. Natalie begins to investigate and comes across several misdiagnoses in his patient files. One of the misdiagnosed patients is teenager Alice. Her father Matthew Bradford is furious when another serious treatment error by Daniels has almost fatal consequences. Are Daniel’s lapses related only to the accident?
Forced to agree, Daniel allows Natalie to cover for him at the practice. During the time father and daughter spend together for the first time in years, they rediscover each other. And in the process, Natalie must also learn that she may not know the whole truth about her parents’ separation. It’s a realization that hurts her and forces the entire family to finally come to terms with the past. Natalie begins to think about her life and her own career direction …
