ČSSR, 1983: The Institute for Paranormal Phenomena, or IPP for short, is in the midst of an image crisis. For the socialist leadership of Czechoslovakia, it provides too few useful results when it comes to hauntings and other phenomena, and the public is completely unaware of the existence of the experts around institute director Peter Čurko. The motley crew that populates Čurko’s strange institute includes the hard-boiled David Zajíc, the novice engineer Vojta Bek, and the employees known only as Juna 1 and Juna 2, who are happy to carry out all the parascientific experiments on their own bodies.
Scientist Dr. Karel Pavlas is also researching ointments and miracle cures for eternal life, and Professor Milada “Lada” Minterová is an expert in the field of energy research – although she only works as a secretary for Čurko. And guest researcher Shushrut Kanchanmukh Balakrishnan from the University of Lalbhai Dalpathbhai Ahmedabad only speaks Gujarati, which makes communication with him somewhat difficult.
However, the cases that the institute tries to solve also repeatedly arouse the interest of the State Security Bureau StB in the form of the attractive but beastly agent Snížková and her troubled clerk Hora. Time and again, a dispute arises between the IPP and the StB over responsibilities, as the Institute is responsible for paranormal phenomena, but the StB for murder.
