Rike Schmid and Hendrik Duryn on Shelter Island
A film in the ZDF Sunday Film Series Katie Fforde
After training as a hotel clerk, Polly Cameron (Rike Schmid) returns to the place of her childhood. In the idyllic fishing village of Cherry Cove on the New York coast, she takes over her parents’ cozy bed & breakfast with the help of her friend Bridget (Petra Kleinert). Polly has already invested a lot of work in the “Sunflower” and hopes for a successful first season.
The start is promising: at a party hosted by the mayor Melissa Teerpack (Mignon Remé), she meets the extremely likeable businessman David Locking (Hendrik Duryn). There is an immediate sizzle between Polly and him – much to Melissa’s displeasure, who has long had her eye on the successful single due to her unhappy marriage.
Unfortunately, Polly’s dreams are shattered surprisingly quickly, as she finds out that David is planning a huge construction project with Melissa: The old Cherry Cove is to disappear in favor of a marina with a man-made vacation village. Polly is torn. On the one hand, she has strong feelings for David, on the other hand, the goals of this man are unbearable to her. But Polly wouldn’t be Polly if she didn’t stand up for the things that mean something to her. Together with Bridget, she sets out to mobilize the residents of Cherry Coves against Melissa and David’s ill-advised plan. In her fight against the new marina, she is also supported by Patrick Field (Niklas Osterloh), a mysterious young radio journalist from New York. Polly seems almost at the finish line, when Melissa, out of jealousy and fear of losing the next election, pulls out one last big trump card. Polly seems to be at her wits’ end. To her delight, however, it is David, of all people, who is not left cold by this….
