Torsten Grote, central defender at the Essen soccer club “Rote Erde”, is found beaten to death, only hours after he had almost squandered his team’s victory in the local derby against the “Ückenfelder”, who had been unbeaten for many years, by committing a foul. Only thanks to a brilliant save by the young goalkeeper Lukas Taschenbeck (Sergej Moya) were the fans of the “Rote Erde” able to cheer at the end. A tricky case for chief inspector Lutter, who is confronted with his soccer past and gets into an emotional conflict: Formerly an active player at “Rote Erde” himself, he knows the circle of suspects very well and cannot imagine that one of his team or of the Ückenfelders has Grote on his conscience. With the support of his former teammate, club president Herbert Taschenbeck (Jürgen Tarrach), he wants to shed light on the case. As it turns out, the dead man had a pile of debts, and a not very squeamish bill collector on his heels. What Lutter finally uncovers does not fit at all into the picture of red earth, blood and sweat….
